In non Fincher related news...
Chewie is coming over tonight. We’re going to hang out, and complain about our lives, And probably get drunk. I’m running a little low on beer so we’ll probably end up drinking Bailey’s and Frangelico. Maybe even together. In short it’s going to get kind of messy.

The Social Network
Drawing to a close my Fincher Film Festival is The Social Nework. A brilliant modern parable, loosely based on real people and events. Aaron Sorkin has long been one of my favourite screenwriters, and top air his words with Fincher’s direction is pure cinema magic.
I think it’s the first great story of the Internet to be told on film. There’s no cliched group of hackers hunched...

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
Such a beautiful life affirming film. Every time I watch this it renews my faith in love and romance. People have drawn (not unfairly) parallels with Forrest Gump, but I think the difference is that while Forrest Gump uses one man’s life to tell the story of America, Benjamin Button is really just a love story. Everything Benjamin and Daisy go through, even when they’re loving other...

It's been a while...
since I blogged properly here. I’ll try and have something up by the end of the year.
Meanwhile I’m going to go and get some sleep, and then finish off the Fincher film fest.

Zodiac
Wow! What a fantastic film. I think this is the hidden gem in the Fincher filmography. It’s such a painstakingly accurate recreation, but beneath all that it’s a really wonderful character piece about spiralling obsession. As much as the film is visually stunning (and it does look amazing) the performances really carry it. Even the minor parts like Chloe Sevigny’s are expertly...

Panic Room
Okay, this is a pretty bad film. I mean people are okay in it, but the basic premise is laughable. The ineptitude of the criminals makes it hard to buy into their whole heist. The reactions of the other characters are pretty well off too.
It doesn’t stop Fincher making it look absolutely stunning, including one tracking shot (digitally assisted) that is truly breathtaking. It’s just...

Fight Club
What a movie. Twelve years on it has lost none of its relevance. It still looks and sounds great. Chuck Palahniuk’s story with Fincher’s direction, and stellar performances from everyone involved. It has the peculiar quality of losing absolutely nothing if you already know what happens. In fact I think it’s written so that you get more out of it on later viewings.

The Game
Again a pretty decent thriller that suffers a little from the ‘too many twists’ syndrome. The performances are good, and once again it looks stunning. The way Fincher plays with light and shade gives some truly wonderful frames. I don’t think it’s as good as Se7en, or as good as Fincher’s following film, but I think you can see him evolving visually.
Next up: Fight...

Se7en
Now that’s what I’m talking about. One of the finest cinematic thrillers ever. There is nothing that doesn’t work with this film. The soundtrack is spot on, the performances are all out of this world. It’s a visual masterpiece, every shot so carefully chosen. If you haven’t seen it then you really should, and if you have seen it you should watch it again.
Tomorrow...

Alien 3
I haven’t seen it for a handful of years, and it’s kind of a messy film. It does terrible things with the rules of the franchise (how can you have Alien POV when they don’t have eyes?) and it’s quite badly written from a script point of view (a case of too many cooks).
Nevertheless there are some iconic visual moments, and some pretty breathtaking sequences. Most notably...

David Fincher Film Fest
In anticipation of the January 12 release of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, I’m going to watch all of David Fincher’s feature length films in chronological order. Starting right now with Alien 3.
Anyone care to join me?

Christmas is over
and now my lonely life can recommence in earnest. Sorry for the brief disruption to our regularly scheduled programming.
With the help of good friends I made it through a really good couple of days. I scored some epic loot, and actually got to feel festive and even loved for a little while.
That’s all over now though, and I’m back to having the place to myself.
It’s not so bad...

I hope you all had a good Christmas.
I had a pretty relaxing afternoon chilling with a good friend. We watched Kill Bill, and I geeked out over the genius of Tarantino (there’s one tracking shot in the House Of Blue Leaves sequence that we watched about three times because it’s just that fucking good).
Tomorrow I get to have Christmas version 2.0 with mini me. Which should be great if this headache evaporates overnight.

I had a dream last night.
The only thing I can remember from this dream is that my ex wife mocked my sexual prowess. This may be a new low for my self confidence.

I watched Blue Valentine.
It’s wonderful. Beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and very very real.
The only thing is it’s kind of bummed me out. Hopefully the newest episode of Leverage will buoy my spirits enough for a good night’s sleep.
Otherwise my Christmas sad may have started a few days early this year.
Having a sad sort of moment.

That awkward moment...

I guess I’m officially a charity case now.
